Thailand

I'm there now, it's a bit hot.

It took a while to get here, we set off from home at half 5pm and arrived at the hotel the next day at about 2pm (8pm ish Bangkok time). I'd been to work before the trip so I was going on about 30 odd hours without sleep. Needless to say, I didn't do much yesterday. I did buy some soup tho, a taste mix of veg, some unknown balls of meat, possibly a fish stock and some firey spice and sugar. It was very tasty indeed. However, something went wrong in the comunication department and it was given to me in 3 bags. Luckily, back at the hotel, the nice chap that sits outside smoking and holding the doors open was quick to see what the score was and he gave me a bowl. I was originally planning to use the tiny coffee cup in the room, the bowl was a lot better suited to the job. Later on I gave the helpful chap a rollie, he was well pleased. After that I went to bed and slept right through til morning.

Today we went to the grand palace, which is pretty grand. Saw the giant reclining Budda, which is pretty giant. Faced death on a tuk tuk ride to the Chatuchuk weekend market then got the sky train back. On the food list today has been spicy chicken for breakfast, quail eggs wrapped in squid, squid eggs (which is what I though I was buying with the last one, a chocobanana and some kind of strange donut pasty hybrid. All tasty stuff, pic will follow in the food thread when I'm back.

For tomorrow, kate has just tried to sort us out with a trip to the floating market and the bridge over the river kwai. Not sure how thats going to work out though, a nice taxi driver gave us his number today and mentioned taking us if we ring him later. From the sound of kates call, we could end up anywhere. Sould be interesting though, the bloke is called Mr Terrapin.

Just about to go out for a snack then probably off to bed, its been another tiring day.

Chicken for breakfast.

I don't know why I'd never thought of it before.

It was great. Obviously I took a photo so you can see what its like when I'm back. It was sort of a part boiler and grilled chicken served with rice, veg and a spicy soup. It seems popular here to have soup served with the ingredients seperate. In the bowl is the stock and then in a side dish is the veg and meat. Works for me. I'm making a point of taking photos of everything I eat. That said, I had my camera and phone on charge earlier when I went out so I've missed taking pics of a weird fish sausage, an unusual fig cake that had an oddly cheesy taste and some tasty roast pork but I'm sure there will be plenty of chance to catch up with such things at a later date. I did however get a pic of the seaweed flavour crisps I bought and brought back to the hotel. Strangly morish.

No pics of the fish sausage, I forgot the camera. It looked just like a chippy battered sausage but with a fishy surpise inside.

Mr Terrapin turned up on time but his price for the river Kwai was too much so we decided to just do the floating market. It was good, tons of over priced tat was for sale. I did buy some and probably got fleeced for it but it was amusing to barter with the seller to the point where they start to fake cry and beg for you to offer more. Got a rather nice photo album/ scrap book. The starting price was 1250BHT, we got it for 350BHT. Like I said, probably still got fleeced but it was a price we were happy with and the seller was ok with it so everyone was happy. After that, Terrapin wanted to take us to a place called the rose garden so we set off thinking it'd be a nice pretty garden to look at and hang around in for a bit. It did kind of look like that but they wanted about a tenner each for entry so we got Terrapin to just bring us back to the hotel. On the way back we had some serious monsoon type weather. It was ace, rain so hard you could hardly see anything. It laster about half an hour then it was back to baking heat. After a cool off in the air con room we got the sky train into Siam centre and had a look around the shops. Well, more specifically, the food court. Got plenty of pics of tasty treats. A particular favorite was the deep fried sweet potato. Very nice indeed. I also tried some grilled and marrinaded pork, an overly sweet pancake, a mini chicken pasty, some other stuff I can't remember and a marrinaded fish burger from a place called Mos Burger. I also ate some of kates terriayki chicken burger because she didn't like it. I could understand why, it was pretty nasty. After the food we went to the cinema to see Resident Evil afterlife. There is some pretty nice 3D zombie smashing action in that, worth a download. To see it in 3D, in fancy reclining seats was about a fiver each. Bargain. In the cinema was the first time i have actually felt cold since getting here, it was most refreshing. After that we got the train back, grabbed some crisps and now its almost bed time. Off to Chian Mai tomorrow. Terrapin is picking us up at 10am ish. I'll report more when I can, I have no idea if the next hotel has internet access.

I woke up early so decided to report on last nights beetle eating. I went for a fag before bed but my mate Li wasn't about to chat to so I went or a wander up the road and spotted a cart selling some interesting looking stuff. No idea what most of it was, mostly some kind of shredded meat or fish. However, I did spot some rather large (about and inch long) beetles and decided to get a few to try. From inspection of the legs I'd guess it was some kind of water beetle. They were only a couple of pence for a big bag load. I just got one scoop to try. There is a video to be uploaded at a later date. The report - not good. Pretty inedible really, I think I may have been doing it wrong. They were served in a bag with a sprinkle of seasoning and a squirt of chilli sauce (from the kind of bottle used to water house plants, not a bad idea really). I first tried one whole. It was rock hard, took some force to break the shell. After that it was like crunching sharp plastic so I abandoned that one. Didn't fancy swallowing something that could slice up my insides. Kate suggested that in the Indiana Jones film, they crack open the beetles and suck out the insides so I gave that a go. It worked better and I got some of the stuff out (is beetle classed as meat? Jelly? Juicy bits?). I was pretty bad. All yellow puss and a bit of chewy stuff. The seasoning and chilli didn't penetrate to the insides so it was full on beetle taste without the mask of spice. The taste was unique but most definatly unappealing. Sort of like chicken liver that had gone off, surprisingly musty. After that I decided to ditch the rest of the bag. I'll probably not try those again but if I spot any other brands of insect, I'll report back.

I forgot to mention yesterdays breakfast of congee. Lord knows what it was made of but if you imagine the sweetcorn soup you get from a chinese, tripple the gloopyness of it, throw in some unidentifiable meat (possibly pork) and a few chunks of what I can only describe as bovril jelly then thats pretty close to what congee was. I was edible and kept me going for the day but its not a repeat meal. As I'm flying today I'm playing safe and having the chicken again, its full of win!

This thread is the highlight of my day! Can't wait for the pics. Would you be be able to bring back some odd spices or would customs see it as a bit fishy?

Good evening. I am now in Samui. The hotel in Chang mai didn't have internet facilities and I was too busy to find an internet cafe. The samui hotel has internet but they charge so it so here is the update, in 15 mins of typing.

While in Chang Mai, we ate a lot of tasty food, some of which we cooked ourselves. We went on a cookery class, run by Thailand top celebrity chef, and it was ace. We were taught to cook 6 different dishes and were given a recipie book with a load more in too. My favorite of the day was the Penang curry, which I went a bit overboard with the chillis on. As well as the black sticky rice pudding. The other stuff was good and tasty too, pics have been taken. The funny thing about thailand is that everything is spicy, even the salad has chillis in it. There have been several emergency poo moments. None dor the last couple of days tho but I did just eat the hottest spicy squid salad ever so that may change.

Anyway, back to chang Mai, we also went to the zoo, which has pandas. Very cute indeed. I have a rather amusing photo of me and kate with the pandas. It has to be seen to be believed. Also, I took a short but very funny video of a flammingo doing a silly dance while searching its pond for food. It made me chuckle for quite some time. Also at the zoo was a baby hippo. That little beast defo ranks in my top ten of favorite animal that I have seen.

Also in Chang Mai we went to an elephant camp and had a ride on the beasts and got to feed them too. One of the largerones caught me off guard and swipped all the bananas and suga cane that I had! Cheeky swine, I was trying to feed its baby, I thought elephants were supposed to be good parents. Apparently not, it didn't share what it stole. Anyway, anothe batch of food cost less than a poud so i just got more and fed a more polite elephant instead. This one did tricks and had a disturing desire to kiss me several times with its trunk. Pics will follow.

Also, I have discovered a fantastic spar treatment. The fish spar. Its ace and regardless of what kate says, I'm going to build one when I get home. Basically, its a massive tank of fish that you dip your feet in and let them eat away any dead or dry skin. It is surprisingly relaxing, esspecially after a day of walking about a lot.

The last thing for Chang Mai was the night bazzar, basically a massive market. It was intersting and I got soem nice and cool cotton shirts for a reasonable price.

Oh dear, times up, gotta go. I'll report more on Samui at another time.

BTW, kev, I'm pretty sure bringing back weird food isn't allowed. I could sort you out with some chilli squid crisps if you like though.

Next update.

The travel from chang mai to samui was interesting. We go a sleeper train. They should probably change the name of it to a nap train really, I got sod all sleep. Every time I started to drift of it would come to a jarring halt then scream like a banshee as it started up again. The food was nice though, given that it was on a train. I had a yellow curry, some stirfried chicken and something else, I can't remember. It was a few days ago. Anyway, after the train we got a bus to the ferry, a ferry to samui and a taxi to the resort. Its ace.

This is where we are staying. http://www.maenamresort.com/ Check out the gallery, view number 20. That shows how close our bungalow is to the beach, its about 4 steps from the porch. This part of the holiday won't generate all kind of exciting or exotic posts, I'll just be sitting/ swimming about and eating until thursday when we go back to bangkok. One of the great things about this place is that food sellers go up and bdown the beach with little bbqs. You just flag one down and have some tasty corn on the cob, chicken, pinapple, bananas, coconut, spring rolls or ice cream. It all reasonably priced too. You can also have a massage for 300bht/ about 6 quid. I've just had one and it lasted about an hour, well worth it. Very relaxing and I had my lobster shoulders covered in a soothing alovera. Nice.

We went up the road the other day, to Bophut, for a look around and some food. I ate a new species for me, barracuda. Very good it was too, very meaty. It was part of a seafood bbq that also included squid, blue crab and tiger prawns. After that we moved to a beach bar for a few drinks before heading back. We probably won't venture too far from our resort again though. The food and drink is cheap but getting around the island is offensivly expensive. Luckily, I went for a walk along the beach yestereday and found a nice little beach bar and grill just 15 mins away. We went last night and it was very nice indeed. I had several tasty cocktails, a red curry, kate had pork loins and ice cream and a few drinks and the bill only came to about 20 quid. Splendid value. Plus, it has two kittens to play with so its a win. Screw you cab drivers, you ain't gonna fleece me again!

Anyway, its all good here, I'll report nagain when I can.

We have left Samui now, just killing time at the airport while waiting to fly back to Bangkok. One more night there they we start the trip back tomorrow. Its going to be harsh, we have a 7 hour wait in Dubi. Think I'll sleep through most of that. Anyway, the last few days on Samui were good. I had a foot scrub and ate one of the best cheeseburgers ever. Bugger, time is almost up, didn't get much for the 10bht. Gotta go, pics will follow when I'm back.

I'm back now. Pretty tired. Not had much sleep. About 30 hours ago I was in Bankok airport. Grabbed a couple of hours kip in Dubai but it wasn't exactly quality sleep. I'm back in work on monday so I need to get back on UK time so I'm going to hold off having a nap and go for an early night instead. I'm feeling too spaced out to upload pics but I'll get to it at some point. Right now though I have a simply pleasure planned, a nice poo on my own loo. Can't wait. Literally, the turtle is breaching as I type!

I'm back from holidays too, I read a lot of books and zombie literature on a hammock, ate lots of local dishes (that all happen to look like kebab) and got drunk.

Every day.

That is all.

Sounds nice. Which books did you read? I'm currently reading a very good one called Zompoc.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_41?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=zompoc+how+to+survive+a+zombie+apocalypse&sprefix=zompoc+how+to+survive+a+zombie+apocalypse

It has lots of good detail and handy hints. Also, it is written from a UK perspective so it does mention guns but there is more focus on other weapons and tactics. I actually think its better than Max Brooks' zombie survival guide.

Stick a plus box on that list too, it'll save all the downloading.

http://walkingdead.fxuk.com/

Walking Dead starts on FX on 5/11/10. Not bad that, only 5 days after America.
