Been a while since we all properly hung out (though I'm still in plaster).
Anyway, since about Christmas I've been doing a spot of the old urban exploration.
Basically, it involves visiting interesting man-made places and taking pictures. It includes derelict or abandoned places, hotels, rooftops, lift shafts, drains and sewers, basically anywhere that's generally off limits.
Just thought I'd share a few pictures I've taken over the last few months.
On the Lowry footbridge...
(Something in the background for a few of you)
A Green Quarter rooftop...
Above the BBC's MediaCity development...
Behind the Academy...
Underneath UMIST...
In a drain I discovered...
On top of an abandoned tower block.
A massive, and I mean MASSIVE, sewage overflow chamber...
A massive, and I mean MASSIVE, Victorian sewage overflow chamber...
More Victorian sewage overflow...
A culverted (underground section) of river...
Enjoying a drink in the BRSA club (an underground working men's club under Victoria station closed since 1992)
More Victorian sewage. You've not lived until you've Moonwalked through other peoples' stagnant turds...
Now one of my favourites. On top of an apartment in Manchester's Green Quarter. You can see Victoria Station, Urbis, the Triangle, St. Anne's Church, Great Northern Tower, Beetham Tower and more!
I make no apologies for the number of pictures here. Just thought it'd be something to share that you'd all enjoy.
Sorry for the buzzkill - great pictures and all that - but DO NOT go into any more sewers or drains unless you have a gas monitor that can detect methane and sulphur dioxide. One will blow you up, the other will trash your kidneys and lungs. If you do this often enough, chances are you will run into one or both at some point.
Also, if you get any of these symptoms, you might have caught Weils disease from rat piss. Go to a doctor immediately and tell him you've been dicking around in sewers.
When I was in the IoM doing those sewer flow surveys, I had to be immunised against all kinds of nasty stuff, had gas monitors, a rebreather and a recovery winch and it was still dangerous as fuck to go down there.
Some of these places are off limits for a really good reason, you crazy bastard!
Again, cool pics though.

I'm very aware of the risks. The real mad bastard sewer explorers do take gas monitors with them. However we tend to stick to CSO's and combined systems though, so there's usually a flow of freshwater so the sewerfresh is diluted and not stagnant.
We don't do this without research, and are very aware of the dangers!
How do you find these unlocked doors? Is it as simple as spotting a derelict building and trying the door? Is there a website that lists these places?
Also, what is the law like for general trespassing, without breaking in? If the rozzers busted you would it just be a telling off or are there fines? I would guess that the anti terror laws could cause some bother to you if the coppers didn't like you. What with you sneaking around the unpopulated parts of a city, with a moustache and camera. Everybody knows facial hair = terrorist.
Got any more pics? Fill the thread with them if you like, they are very interesting.
We were made aware of lots of public sewer records that were unaccounted in an abandoned water depot for by an urban exploration team who do this sort of stuff.
My job is to commit CSOs and large sewer chambers/major assets to public records.
You may be a useful person to know in regards to "new discoveries"! ;)
As for your questions Goerner, lot of sites have been visited before and you'll spot a report on somewhere like 28DL that will inspire you to go. I have more fun in trying to find new places though.
Trespass is only a civil offense. You can't get arrested for it, the landowner can only ask you to leave. If I get asked to leave, then I will (just not been caught yet ;) ). The exception to this is railways - railway trespass is criminal and can result in heavy fining.
As for anti-terror stuff, that will only come into play if you visit a live nuclear power plant or are near a water supply.

This one's a 3-mile long drain relief under Warrington...
Haha, fucking hell i would have thought they would have torn it down by now!
The last time i was there was about two years ago and it was due for demo then!
If you're ever down this neck of the woods or are planning something that's not ten thousand miles from Essex give me a heads up, it's a hobby i'd quite enjoy getting back into.
Some good stuff there. I liked the few pics of the bloke looking into the water with the snorkle and mask. I didn't realise urban exploration included seeing what is inside a puddle. Just goes to show that anything can be explored if you have the inclination to do so.
