Metal On Metal

Ok, scene report.

Let's go back in time three months. We decide to set up a metal show, and book all of the bands within a few weeks. Settle on prices, got someone with a P.A. to come down, booked the venue. All is well.

In the meantime, we put posters everywhere we can and spread the word ad infinitum.

Then, the big day arrives. Except our P.A. man/sound tech is out of reach - not answering his phone. Eventually, after 30 missed calls, 15 minutes before sound check he calls back sounding superstoned "uh, see the thing is, my pa's fucked up, and some of my mics have been stolen". We tell him to bring whatever he has - "uh, well the thing is, I dunno how I'm gonna get there". Panic ensues. We call everybody in existance that owns a P.A. until succumbing to humilation and asking on the bands. Feemo and the other H.O.D./Neandertahl legends pull us through genearously bringing a big van of fucking everything, and after this everything calms down.

Heretic open, except their drummer bailed so they had to resort to a (admittedly well programmed) drum machine. Pretty ballsy music to play at what is essentially a thrash crowd - dissonant and somewhat experimental. For an unpaid opening band I was happy with their performance.

Neandertahl bump up the ante with their semi-progressive take on thrash-death, including an insane frontman going wild on a fretless bass (much to the amazement of many in the crowd). Great, heavy set, highly entertaining. Some guys I know actually wanted to buy cds but by the end of the night they were no longer out at the merch stand? Forwarding them onto myspaces etc. anyway.

Drunken McDan gets me excited about Seregon, praising them before their set even started. And they definitely raised the bar further. Really great, powerful sound, fantastic songs - especially great in the live context (I can still see James' wide-eyed grin staring down on the crowd before 'Kingdom of the Blind' thrashes out). Was planning on buying the cds but looks like I won them in a raffle, so yay for me.

And as expected, H.O.D. get up and wipe the floor with...well, with music itself. It's not only that the band are fantastic musicians (especially The Rev, who I overheard being compared to Halford by two strangers in the toilets) but highly entertaining performers aswell. The show was Arnie impersonation and fake Swedish accent galore - Let's Go Apeshit and White The Lightning in particular rocked my cock off.

Dan covers the floor in beer before being brutally finger-sodomized by...everybody in the carpark, we raise about £65 for Mike's family, the barman asks us if we can do a monthly metal night, and I wake up with a fucked up neck - the sign of a great night.

So now boys, what do we owe you for last minute P.A./kit rental? We we're initially paying the original "sound tech" (sic) £40, but he was a jobless bum so ended up being rather cheap, so it's your call. I'd like to say a big thank you to all bands, no one let us down and the music was fantastic throughout, and thanks to everyone that came along. Don't know why I'm doing shout outs when the only people reading this are about two members of HOD and Dan but goddamn it I tried!

Thanks to everyone, and if we try to book you in future, relax. We'll have our own full P.A. within a month's time and won't be relying on anyone else. Thanks again for an amazing night, and I really hope you all enjoyed it.

*EDIT: Heretic's music was ballsy, not balls.

 Will do.

And you weren't a bad/annoying/stupid/too talkative drunk, just a relatively merry and 'looks-like-hes-having-a-good-time' drunk so don't worry about having to stay sober :P

My favourite song was the one where you spilled beer in my hair.

I was stood towards the back and saw this happen. It was almost in slow motion. Dan's glass was thrust into the air, the momentum carried the beer higher, the glass moved away, the beer carried on, then sploosh, a good quarter of a pint came crashing down. A quick glance towards Dan with a look that said "You drunken fool!" followed by a smile and head shake at the realisation that Dan was so drunk he didn't know what was happening then you continued with the head banging, complete with beer hair. You took it in the good time spirit of the night, credit to you. For future events though, Dan, keep your pint off the dancefloor. Not everyone is as good natured as Muloc. As you were splashing beer around you were getting some less than friendly looks from the people behind you. Luckily Muloc took one for the team and after that there wasn't enough beer to spill out of the glass. You owe him a pint next time you see him. You crazy kid. no

Ha. One of the best HOD gigs and the number 1 superfan can't remember it. biggrin

I'm sure you are fine to carry on as you are, just leave the beer on the table. I was also half expecting some fizz-boom equipment explosion or at least Dave getting electrocuted from the dodgy mic wire + flying beer. On reflection though, the latter would have been quite funny.

After we paid Seregon & for the van we were down £30 to cover for the price of the beer and butties for the bands. Call it £35 and I'll give you 10 wholesale Surge kill Steals for your shop! You can make the money back then that way plus more.

Round it up to an even £40 and we have a deal :P

What's the best way to get it to you? I have paypal, although as far as I know you live in orford (apparently one of you guys lives across the road to my mate Joe on Tomilson I think it is) so if so I can just run round with it tomorrow morning.

Oh yeah, and Seregon apparently never picked up the crate from behind the bar? Jeff told me to tell you today, not sure what you wanna do about it. I can drop those off aswell if you want.

Ok, here is the grim reality of the proposed "monthly metal night".

The owner of the club wants a monthly metal night because he made loads of money and has pound signs in his eyes, he does not really give a fuck about heavy metal music. I have seen this kind of thing lots of times before, and the lads in the bands will back me up.

Go ahead and try it, it will be a good learning curve for you Muloc, but there are too few bands of decent enough quality and popularity in the local area, and the location of the venue is too remote to draw anyone decent. By the 3rd monthly gig, the owner will notice the takings will not be anywhere near as good and will not be as wide eyed and keen anymore and will not ask you back.

Maybe every 3 or 6 months would be plausable, gives you plenty of time book bands, drum up interest and plan so you don't have to be let down by dick head sound guys.

Well, he's been honest about that himself. Basically, some guys do a country western day every month (first saturday) and have done for the last year and he's been very happy with it. Has kept consistant, the people come, spend their money, cause no trouble. He has them booked down for up until the end of 2011. He said he can't stand the music (he's a sports guy and isn't into music at all) but is happy that they're consistantly bringing a crowd.

There was also a soul night that he had to terminate because not enough people were coming, it ended up going down to about 20 (infact, the very last one had 12 people) and it just wasn't worth it for him. He was pretty open about the fact that he's not interested in the music and is just working from a business perspective (it would be silly to think he was just doing it for the fuck of it), and said he wants to get to the point where he can say he no longer has a spare function room so he doesn't have to worry about wedding parties/birthdays etc. anymore.

Will take a lot of work but I don't think it's too unrealistic to get more than 50 people a month. We'll see anyway. There's no loss if not, but we're keeping positive.

Country AND western you say? i may have to check that out, as long as it does not include line dancing.

Its good you remain positive, it's easy to do so after a storming night like Friday.

It was very lucky you had 2 bands who are self sufficent though as it could have been a complete disaster. Hopefully, word of mouth may make its way around town and you can get the 50+ folks a month. Good luck to you with all your future promotions!

Thank you, and thanks for playing devil's advocate. It's definitely needed.

As for the bands being prepared, it definitely saved the night, that can't be understated, but we won't have this problem again with our own P.A. (which is being used for our gigs and such in town aswell, so don't worry, we're not just blindly splashing out in hope of making this night a success).

My advice would be to charge more on the door - I think you could have easily got away with £4 which obviously would have doubled your takings.

Yep, definitely. We're knocking it up to £3 at least for the january show and see how it goes.

I'm the guy on Tomlinson Ave, if you want me to drop the CD's off with Joe then you could leave the money with him. Just send me a mail as to where and when. Nice one fella.... plus obviously if there is beer to be collected tell me what to do! biggrin

Ste and Stu make a good point, the location of the place will make it hard to grab a monthly crowd but I'm guessing the boss of the place would want an ongoing event to keep his calendar full.

My other concern would be that there's not a great deal of unsigned bands that are professional / crowdpulling enough to keep it going. Still, any metal in Warrington is good and the location of the place next to motorway junctions means it's ideal once you get a good budget.

Before you commit to the place, have you ever considered asking to do shows at the roadhouse pub by the way? A smaller crowd would make that place look very busy and it's got a great beer garden / bbq.

Behind blockbuster video in town, brand new metal pub that needs business. Maybe you could go in and say for a set price you'll do a night for them. That way, you don't have to worry about takings, the bands can get a set fee and the venue gets local business. Ker-chings all round.

It's a pub mind you with no stage but you'd still have easily fit Saturdays crowd in it and it would have looked rammed.
