Do any of you brew stuff yourselves? If so I need ideas, my first batch of ale started two weeks ago and is currently sitting in bottles while I wait for it to clear.
By "the fun job" do you mean the tasting job? If so, yes, I have to taste the beer and give it a score. Its not as good as it sounds though. You would be amazed at the amount of 2% lager and bitter we produce. Its not the best tasting stuff.
I was thinking recipes, my first batch was just a basic malt barley, yeast, hops and water combo. It's turned out a bit thin for me so far.
Thats pretty much all beer is. Its simple stuff. To get more body, you need to have the present gravity at around 8 to 10 at the end of its fermentation (for ale that is, a full bodied lager need only be around 6 ish). Do you have some method for working this out? A hydrometer or saccharometer?
The amount of malt you put in will effect the body so try increasing that. Also the type of malt will make a difference too. If you can get some, try adding some chocolate malt. It doesn't taste anything like chocolate, its more like coffee. It will add colour and a roasted flavour to the beer. Put loads in and you will have something like guiness.
When it comes to flavored beer (like the banana one that was suggested) I hate to shatter the illusion but they are just a concentrated essence thats added while its in conditioning. You can get similar things in the bakery section of Asda.
So cherry beer from the beerfest is just beer & cherry chemical? That by no means then explains why it costs me two fucking gold tokens every fucking year at the beerfest for a pissy 250ml bottle. Bloody charities.
I had a hydrometer for home brew, it was one of those cool things that you bought as it sounded cool, only right now do I know what it does. Cool word two...Demijohn.
